Cultured Marble: The Truth Behind Its 'Timelessness' in Home Design

Ahh, cultured marble. You've seen it everywhere: kitchen countertops, bathroom walls, shower stalls... it's practically become a permanent fixture in modern homes. But here's a question for you: do you think cultured marble is truly timeless? Or are we all being duped by its glossy, elegant allure? Let's delve into this subject and separate the truth from the glitz.

TL;DR

This post demystifies cultured marble, examining what it is, its origins, and the reality behind its touted timelessness in home design.

What exactly is this Cultured Marble?

So, what's the deal with cultured marble? Despite the name, it's not extracted from an Italian mountain nor chiseled by an ancient artist's hand. Instead, it's a synthetic material produced when limestone dust and polyester resin are blended together. A much better option for a man-made material would be quartz. However, I do caution against any man made material with artificial veining meant to look like marble or granite.

Why is everyone so obsessed with it?

Cultured marble is beloved for its luxurious look and cost-effectiveness. It mimics the appearance of real marble (without hurting your wallet), and it's also much easier to maintain. That’s a pretty sweet deal, right? Think again.

What's lurking beneath the surface?

But here’s the twist: cultured marble isn’t as durable as the real deal. While it's resistant to stains, scratches, and mildew, it can chip, crack, burn, and discolor over time. Plus, it may not withstand the test of time in terms of style as real marble does. Also, unfortunately, most people will know it's not the real deal.
